It has been a year since I’m meeting you through CEO’s message.
Also, a month has already gone by since we had the opening ceremony
for the Year of the Mouse.
A month accounts for 1/12 of a year, which means that 8.3% of year 2008 has passed.
Old saying that“Time flies like an arrow and passes like flowing water”
still remains as an excellent expression today.
The famous inscription on George Bernard Shaw’s tombstone,
“I knew if I stayed around long enough, something like this would happen,”
(The very quote which originated the idea of our 2007 mega-hit campaign, ‘SHOW’)
connotes how one should weather the storm of times.
I know it would sound too cynical if I interpreted his quote as
“if I stayed around long enough, I would find myself buried in a grave,”
- however, these days I find myself more inclined to this translation.
I asked all of you to undertake bold changes through my New Year’s message.
Borrowing from Edison’s quote, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration,”
my belief is “change is 1% planning and 99% execution.”
We have completed a management strategic meeting and corporate reorganization
throughout January, hoping to take charge on bold changes.
We have established 1% of planning for the past 8.3% of the year.
From now on, we need to be fully committed to accomplishing 99% of execution
for the remaining 11 months which will pass by in the blink of an eye.
While prudent planning is a virtue, execution should not be made in a hesitant manner.
I asked you to read CEO’s message as if reading a love letter
when I started this February last year.
However, I should admit and call for grave reflection that it sometimes sounded
more like an admonitory speech from a school principal, rather than a love letter.
In that sense, I would like to share a list of seven “Not-to-Dos” dubbed
the “Axis of Evil” as part of my new year’s resolutions.
Seven Axis of Evil in organization
1. The person always full of excuses - could be considered ‘enemy of the state’
2. The free-rider - It’d be unhygienic to ‘blow your nose without your fingers
(Korean proverb)’, right?
3. Those who ‘sit and watch the fire across the river (Korean proverb)’
- If you find yourself thinking ‘That’s none of my business’,
you should keep in mind that what matters most is getting the work done well,
not arguing who’s responsible for the work.
4. Those who don’t do their best - Let’s remember that in the world of business
we’re like soldiers on battlefield, where the rule of thumb is “Dozing kills”
5. The ‘NATO’s - Those who take ‘No Action (but keep) Talking Only’:
It’s important to think before we speak - but it’s more important to act before we speak.
6. The ‘OA’s - Of course as human beings we tend to exaggerate, take ‘over-action’
and try hard to self-PR, but please let’s not mount the high horse!
7. The client’s servant - The difference between amateurs and professionals,
the difference between major league and minor league lies in whether they have
self-respect or not - this is especially true for those in client-servicing industry
like us.
These are my personal new year’s resolutions.
Since you and I are on the same boat and I am the captain,
I’m sure by now you’ve all had these resolutions engraved in your heart, right?
:-D I was just kidding.
Lastly, I’d like to present you with yet another G.B. Shaw’s quote.
When playwright George Bernard Shaw was asked to write down the ten most famous authors,
he wrote down his own name ten times and defended himself by saying,
“It is useless to have a level of confidence that people would not consider arrogant.”
I may sound like I’m ‘giving you the disease and then giving you the remedy (Korean proverb)’
- No worries. I was joking. I will surely remember and be grateful for all your efforts.
